3. Under the Ottomans, three-quarters of the inhabitants of the Levant were Arab-Muslim, but the Jewish minority had considerable freedom in terms of religion and education. What worried the Ottomans was the very rapid immigration of Jews from Europe at the end of the nineteenth century and Zionism.
